The assembly begins with the cylinder block. Technicians measure bearing oil clearances with precision gauges, lubricate the main bearings thoroughly, and torque the main bearing caps to factory specifications. Piston rings are fitted onto the pistons with carefully measured end gaps. Each piston is then attached to its connecting rod via a wrist pin, and the entire assembly is slid into the cylinder bore using a ring compressor tool. Head bolts are tightened in a specific sequence and torque pattern to ensure even clamping force. The camshaft is installed into the head journals, and the entire valvetrain is checked for proper clearance and operation.
The timing chain or timing belt is routed around the crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprockets according to factory timing marks. Misalignment by even a single tooth can cause poor performance, engine damage, or complete failure. Modern engines often use variable valve timing (VVT) actuators that require special alignment procedures during assembly.
The oil pan is sealed and bolted to the bottom of the block. Valve covers, front timing covers, and external accessories such as the water pump, oil pump, and intake manifold are installed. Before the first start, the engine's oil system is primed — either by cranking without fuel or using a pressurized oil primer — to ensure all bearings and moving surfaces are lubricated from the very first rotation.
What is the difference between a short block and a long block? A short block is the engine's rotating core (block, crank, pistons, rods). A long block adds the cylinder head, camshaft, and valvetrain — essentially everything except external accessories and intake/exhaust manifolds.
